2016: A Year in Review

At the Gill Foundation, we envision a world where all people are equal regardless of who they are or who they love. In 2016, we partnered with new allies and funded more opportunities to protect greater numbers of LGBT people across the country.

Our Team

We invested over $16 million to advance equality in 2016, increasing our total invested since inception to $316 million.

Our team grew when one of the smartest legal minds in the LGBT movement, Mary Bonauto, joined the Gill Foundation board.

We celebrated the one year anniversary of winning the freedom to marry and toasted the 132,000 same-sex couples who have said “I do” since June 26, 2015.

We traveled across the country to meet with grantees working to advance equal treatment over 70 times.

We donated to 3 nonprofits through our employee giving circle.

Our Grantees

Protecting the greatest number of people in the shortest amount of time, that’s our goal. In 2016, the Gill Foundation continued to invest in efforts and forge new partnerships to advance equal treatment for LGBT people state-and-nationwide.

The Stonewall Inn became the 1st national monument to specifically highlight the history of the LGBT community.

Over 384,500 LGBT people are now protected from discrimination thanks to governors in Louisiana, Montana, New Hampshire, and Virginia issuing inclusive executive orders.

163,900 transgender adults in 9 states can now update their ID documents to more accurately reflect who they are.

5,233 businesses stood up for equality thanks to the work of business coalitions in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, and Texas.

Led by Equality Federation Institute and in-state partners, canvassers in 4 states had 3,971 conversations about transgender people at their homes and on the phone.

Freedom for All Americans Education Fund trained 54 public education campaign managers through their program, LGBT University.

Faith in Public Life organized 1,214 faith leaders across the country to speak out for LGBT people, showing that faith and support for equality go hand in hand.

Colorado is our home. We fund here to make sure everyone has the same opportunity to thrive. In 2016, we invested more than $1.7 million to ensure all Coloradans can share in our state’s opportunities.

3 smartlabs were built in elementary schools, completing the development of a comprehensive STEM program in all K-12 Englewood Schools.

The Center for Responsible Lending worked to help the 1,000’s of families in Colorado trapped by payday loans each year, some paying an average of 117% annual interest.

13 PBS stations across the state brought quality programming to over 80% of Colorado counties.
