Though it was a challenging year in the fight for equality, Gill Foundation partners remained resilient, advancing efforts to improve the lives of LGBT Americans. More than one million people now have protections that wouldn’t have been possible without the work of our grantees.

Impact

People should be treated equally regardless of who they are or who they love. That’s why the Gill Foundation supports efforts at the state and national level to better the lives of every American.

Equal
Treatment

As of the end of 2018, 30 states still do not protect LGBT Americans from discrimination, even though 71% of the public supports nondiscrimination protections for LGBT people. Through innovative public education and storytelling campaigns, our grantees document the discrimination that LGBT people face, inform the public about the lack of protections, and secure basic rights whenever and wherever possible.

The Ad Council launched Beyond I Do, a public education campaign that shares the heartbreaking stories of LGBT Americans who have been fired from their jobs, evicted from their homes, or refused service simply because of who they are.

Freedom for All Americans Education Fund provided communications, digital, and field expertise to 12 state-based public education campaigns across the country, which informed the public about the harms of discrimination and ultimately helped make the case for discrimination protections in Anchorage, AK, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

Businesses large and small – including Airbnb, Levi’s, Lyft, Yelp, and more than 1,200 small business owners – joined the Open to All coalition, declaring that any business open to the public must serve everyone on the same terms.

State grantees worked with the governors of Michigan, Ohio, and Virginia to protect more than 225,000 state employees and contractors from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and state agencies in eight states provided 513,302 transgender people with better access to employment and healthcare protections.

Youth &
Families

Achieving full equality cannot happen if the youngest among us are not protected. From harmful conversion therapy practices to being forced to use the wrong bathroom at school, youth and their families are stepping up to say “enough.” And it’s working.

The National Center for Transgender Equality trained 136 transgender youth and their families to tell decision–makers about the discrimination and bullying they’ve faced.

Years of public education work done by the National Center for Lesbian Rights and The Trevor Project set the stage for five more states to ban conversion therapy, protecting 178,221 more LGBT youth from exposure to the harmful practice. Additionally, the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board adopted a policy condemning the practice of conversion therapy, protecting 112,090 LGBT youth by removing licenses from anti-LGBT practitioners.

A safe schools policy in New Jersey now allows 80,355 LGBT youth to have their identity respected in a classroom.

The Virginia Department of Social Services adopted a new LGBT‑inclusive policy to protect 4,735 kids currently in foster care.

Colorado

In our home state of Colorado, we believe everyone should have the same access to quality education, safe capital, and unbiased information. That’s why we invested over $1.4 million in 2018 to grantees working to ensure everyone in the state has equal opportunity to thrive.

Classroom

STEM

Two Jeffco Public Schools now have access to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and SmartLabs so they can create K‑12 pathways for students, especially underserved and underrepresented students, encouraging greater participation in these fields for future careers.

Financial Consultation

Access to Safe Capital

Bell Policy Center defended Coloradans from attempts to expand predatory lending practices by educating the public and state leaders with research and analysis about the negative effects of predatory lending.

Public Broadcaster

Public Broadcasting

Sixteen public broadcasting stations across the state brought quality news and cultural programming to residents in every county in Colorado.
